The Battle of Cable Street

Artistic

On October 4th 1936, my grandfather Ubby Cowan, and many other courageous men and women stopped Oswald Mosley and his black-shirt fascists, from marching through the then predominantly Jewish Stepney. Mosley had taken a lesson directly from Hitler of blaming the most visible minority for everything wrong in the public lives. This tactic never goes away, even though the minority changes - in East London for instance it's been French Huguenot, Jewish, Afro-Caribbean, amongst others, and latterly Muslim. In this election year keep your eyes and ears open for the same rhetoric on immigrants and 'the other' who are at fault for all of societies' ills. It's ALWAYS bullshit.
